As a Christian community, we seek to serve God and our neighbors with compassion, love, joy and wisdom. We commit ourselves to sharing and serving through worship, prayer, study and through mission in our community, our nation and the world.

Serving God through serving others is our grateful response to our experience of God's love and mercy. The people of Amherst Presbyterian serve others through a number of outreach and mission projects to the local and world communities.

Current Mission Activities

We contribute to local, national, and international mission efforts through scholarships to our Nursery School and church camp, the Two Cents a Meal Program, and special offerings throughout the year that go to hunger relief, peacemaking and Children's Homes.  We volunteer at Daily Bread, a soup kitchen in Lynchburg, on a bimonthly basis, and help prepare and serve lunch for 70 - 100 people in need. We also volunteer occasionally with Habitat for Humanity.

The church is a supporter of Heifer International, and in July of 2007, thirteen members and friends of APC attended Heifer Ranch's Global Challenge, an educational program run by Heifer International at its facility in Arkansas, that deals with issues of world hunger relief, sustainable agriculture and fair trade.  Prior to leaving, the group raised funds for their transportation through a car wash, bake sale, and donations.  After the trip, the group made a presentation to the congregation, and shared their experience and new understanding of hunger in the world.

Gleaning America's Fields..............................Feeding America's Hungry

Invites you to glean with us

Gleaning is..."hands-on" love in action, a way to feed the hungry, a worth-while activity, for all ages and groups, and lots of fun!

  • Gleanings are scheduled June through November in many parts of Virginia. Gleaning in the Tidewater area is often available year-round.
  • Most gleanings are held on Saturday mornings. Week day gleanings may also be available for groups. We do not glean on Sunday.
  • Gleanings are coordinated and supervised by staff of the Society of St. Andrew
  • Your group may deliver the gleaned produce to agencies or the Society of St. Andrew's Gleaning Network will arrange delievery
  • All age groups are invited to glean.

In 2009, 1,579,949 pounds of fresh produce were gleaned, salvaged and distributed by you, your group and others in Virginia. Gleaning fresh fruits and vegetables is a shared experience with putting food on the table of those who are truly hungry in our communities.
